2007 Y NOT RUN

2007 Frisco Highline

2007 SDC Run
to the Lights
August 16,
2008 - 4th Annual Finley River 5K
The weather was kind to us this morning. Running
along the Finley River added to the coolness, as 103 people lined up to
support the Ozark Cross Country program. Damon Sieger put it
together, with some great help from the OCC Parents. The door
prizes were especially nice -- a sander from Lowe's, Shoney's meals,
skin care -- to name a few. Chris Yates, an alum, ran away with
first place as did Jackie Chen on the women's side.
August 9, 2008 - Big Kahuna 5K
Along with the Maui Mile, over 200 people showed up.
The Hawaiian theme is a draw, and it is fun to see how fast you can run
down that Galloway hill. It was a smooth event.
August 2, 2008
- Miles for Minds
It is unfortunate that more
folks did not know about this race. The goal was to create suicide
awareness. We will do a better job about getting the word out next
time. It was hot, but the men in purple showed up. The NAMI
will benefit from the proceeds.
August 2, 2008
- Kidathlon
There were kids on bikes, kids on foot, and kids on
water. Meador Park was the scene, and it was busy. It is the
goal of the organizers to create enthusiasm for the sport of triathlon,
so much is allowed in the way of assistance from parents and creativity
on the course. Hopefully everyone had a good experience.
July 26, 2008
- Concreteman Triathlon
Once we relocated the buoy that the storm had moved, we
were ready to go in the water ten minutes behind schedule.
Everything flew after that. The fog started to settle just as the
last heat took off, but there were no further delays.
The conditions
made the roads a little greasy. Even the few crashes seemed
minimal and everyone was so tough to keep going.
Someone made off
with one of our tents while we were in town at registration, and we
finally trashed our on-again-off-again meagaphone. These were the
only losses.
We were very
pleased and hopefully not too grumpy.
Come back again
next year. You were all great!
July 19, 2008
Much later on this date, 8 p.m., we regrouped at Willard,
MO and had a little race on the Frisco Trail. It was unique, and
the 10K Runners had to race against darkness. I gained a new
appreciation for modern conveniences, such as light. Thanks to
Kellie and Kerrie at the Willard Parks Dept.
July 19, 2008
Bigger and better -- this seems to be the theme for this
year's road races. The Cox Health Women's Run drew 420
participants this morning -- so many women running this town! Kim
Jacobs led from the start, but the top ten women were all super
competitive and every finisher was a champion. The expo at packet
pickup on Friday was very enjoyable, and the momentum will continue.
Let us know your experiences, opinions, and suggestions
July 13, 2008
This was a most beautiful day for a triathlon. Lake
Freebird welcomed over 80 folks to compete in their sprint distance and
beginner distance triathlons. Cynthia MacPherson and Frank Cottey
handled the details and served as hosts. It is a most unique and
cozy event.
Alan Nippes
passed early leader Jim Hoodenpyle on the bike and never looked back.
Rosie Laughlin captured the lead late in the run to keep things
dramatic. Congratulations to everyone who participated.
See you all next
year.
July 12, 2008
This Y Not Run is well orchestrated by Andrea Porter and
the volunteers and staff of the Hall of Fame. It continues to
grow, as we drew over 300 today. Great shirts, socks, food, and
packets.
The 10K was led
from the start by Chris Yates. Dana Nippes won the women's, pushed
by Amy Pinegar and Rosie Laughlin.
The 5K was nearly
as challenging as the 10K. You were either running drastically
down or up for the entire race.
The one mile was
a lot of fun with adorable children completing their first road race.
July 5, 2008
The Independence Day celebration continues.
Chris Essick puts
on the Firecracker 5000 in Branson each year, with the help of Albert
Lucas. Chris just happens to hold a world record for joggling at
the 800-meter distance, while Albert holds the joggling record for the
110 meter hurdles. Both records were achieved a few years back at
Hayward Field in Eugene, OR. You will find Albert most nights
entertaining at the Dixie Stampede in Branson, while Chris works in the
field of education.
The race prizes
are very worthwhile and moving the event to the Branson Landing last
year ramped up the participation. If you haven't tried
this one, come down next year. Winners this year took home mugs
with cash, bags, or watches. There were drawings for Branson
entertainment and tourist hot spots.
Chris Yates
strolled to an easy victory in the 5K -- almost taking a wrong turn.
Lullel Hickman,
who did take a wrong turn, still placed second in the 10K behind
Michael Marquardt
from Alabama. Jacqueline Alnes
from Reeds Spring won the women's division of the 5K and
Rosie Laughlin
won the women's 10K, followed by
Miriam Flouer
and Jackie Chen.
Hats off to you all!

July 4, 2008
Happy 4th of July! This
race is becoming an OMRR Club tradition in its third year.
Melissa Adler
won the one mile -- a new distance for her.
Russ Traphagen
finished first in the three mile and
Mark Schiffelbein was
first in the two mile. Chris and Linda Revoir did a bang-up job,
assisted by Becky and Mike Hollis. Have a safe and wonderful day.
June 28, 2008
In its third year, this race nearly doubled from last
year. Because of the effort of folks like Clayton Brown, Paul
Potthoff, and Joe Dawes and the fantastic publicity that has been
generated, Chris' memory continues to live.
The rain made it
more difficult, but John
Williams held off
David Hunsucker
and Kelley Johnson
(our Mizuno representative from Kansas City) held off
Rosie Laughlin.
It was a really tough women's field with a handful of girls like
Rosie, Melissa, Pam, Cherie, and
Miriam continuing to improve each week.
I am looking forward to the women's run!
June 21, 2008
We were in Alaska for this one. Linda Brewer, Linda
Barnett, Michelle Shatswell, and Brent Barnett pulled it off without us.
The attendance was up a good 20 percent. The folks at Aldersgate
UMC, along with Karen and Zack Frazier and Allyn Wollard make this a
quality event with the giveaways and pancake breakfast. It raised
funds for their church programs. Thanks everyone for your support.
June 7, 2008
This was a productive day for all who could keep their feet on the
ground. The wind gusted.
Some people
spotted white squirrels while running the 5K in Marionville. This
race had over 200 participants this year. They were motivated by
either a squirrel medal or trophy -- whatever it takes!
Some
folks headed for Joplin to experience the 5k or 10K at Boomtown Days.
Landreth Park was a great setting, with its ampitheater. Some of
these participants were motivated by the prize money.
Both were
successful and well run by their respective race directors - Tina Cook
and Audie Dennis.
May 31
I always talk about the weather, so let me say today's
story was the children. They are so cute and try so hard.
Look at the times for some of the three and four-year-old's. The
big kids were great too. Check out times for the High School Elite
Mile. We appreciate Cox Medical Center for continuing this effort.
And, by the way, the weather was great!
May 24
A torrential downpour set the tone for this day. As
we scrambled to get all of the electronics into the trailer, runners
took cover under the two small tents and inside their cars. We
will not forget this one. Finally, at 8:15, we were able to get
started. Nate Carlson from Ft. Leonard Wood won for the men and
Miriam Flouer raced first to the finish among the women. ...just a
little excitement to make us all stronger.
May17
Finally, some great weather on a weekend. It was a
beautiful morning as the runners ran through the neighborhood and
retraced their steps back to the Store. It is always a fast event,
where some of the finest show up to compete. Chris Yates ran alone
and crossed the finish line in 17:14, while Rosie Laughlin had some
stiff competition with Miriam Flouer and snuck in with a 20:59.
Richard Leiboult and Becky Lowrance flew to the finish to capture the
masters competition. Thanks everyone for showing up.
May10
Congratulations
to Pat Dierking and all of the folks at City Utilities who made this a
fantastic event. We had 612 entrants in the competitive field and
a couple hundred more who walked just for pleasure. Everything
worked beautifully, and we appreciate everyone's support.
May 3-4, 2008
The
Law Day 5K had over 80 participants on Friday. I think the
competition between firms is the primary focus, though we had some fast
runners. (Does anyone have an ambulance we could use next year for
the pace vehicle?)
The Bradleyville
Race is always one of my favorites. We got some ringers in from
Kansas City, Fayetteville, and Springfield to win the money.
Secondly, the way this town shows up to participate in the one mile is
very impressive. The burgers and hot dogs at the finish line are
fun, but nothing tops the warm reception at the Combs Mansion afterward
on top of Bugle Mountain. (Do you think they would notice if I
moved in?)
Tyson and Patty
Petty did a bang-up job on the first Pershing Run for Recess. It
was all about the kids, and they showed up to participate in a fun run
after the 5K. I wish that I could have been in two places that
day!
Sunday, April
27, 2008
Cape Girardeau, Missouri welcomed us for their 24th
Annual Steamboat Classic. It was a well-executed event, and we
enjoyed doing the timing. Wherever we go, runners are friendly and
courteous. We had fun eating our way across the State.
Saturday,
April 26, 2008
Aurora, Missouri rolled out the red carpet for all runners on this day.
The course was flat and scenic and the weather was perfect. Matt
Wegenka raced for the first time since last fall and captured the win,
followed by Lullel Hickman. The race will continue to grow in
years to come. Thanks to the Pettit family for their
contributions.
The second annual
Panera Run for Hunger was reminiscent of the old Hardy's 5 Miler in
Southern Hills. There were tons of people. The course is
undulating and scenic and a nice change of pace from the norm.
The prizes were perfect, since all runners spend an enormous amount of
time in the Panera shops. Thanks to Mindy Spitz for all of her
hard work.
Saturday,
April 19, 2008
The folks in Branson were happy to be above water.
They celebrated with a 5K, raising money for the Berean Liberty
Christian School. The course changed at the last minute due to the
flooding. The cash prizes to the top three males and females of
$100, $75, and $50 make this worthy of consideration for next year's
calendar.
Many folks showed
up to do the Route 66 5K & 1 Mile. All were happy to see the
sunshine and signs of spring and hear the birds. Richard had some
unique plaques and trophies, and Route 66 is an appropriate venue for
fast runners. Results for both events are posted.
Saturday,
April 12, 2008
We were in three places today. All of them were
cold, windy, and sleeting. Even so, many folks showed up to
support some great causes.
The Conquer
Cancer race in Willard speaks for itself. (Kimberly Jacobs put the
hammer down and beat all of the men!)
The Mercy Me race
in Lebanon, sponsored by St. John's, provides funds for area health
needs. Finally, the Ridgecrest Baptist Church had its inaugural
race, hosted by Shawn Moreland. All funds will be put to good use.
The results for the races are published.
Saturday,
April 5, 2008
Once
again, Abilene, KS rolled out the red carpet. This is the only
marathon I know of that shuts down a major highway for six hours.
The weather was much kinder this year and made for a pleasant weekend
overall. Check it out sometime. The results are posted.
Saturday,
March 22, 2008
What a fun day we had! Ned
Reynolds was a great emcee, while Joel Alexander provided the mood
music. Lewis Greisemer brought along the train whistle which got
everyone started. Brent and Brenda Green did an excellent job of
overseeing the race and getting the food. Jerry Gardner procured
some great medals and trophies and tied up many other details. Joe
Costella was a thorough race director, generous sponsor, and always
available.
Monty handled the volunteers, as usual. Thanks to the entire
committee for their hard work.
Congratulations
to Val Searfimov
who won the half marathon with a time of
1:19:00.2. Janell Williams from
Monett won the women's overall in 1:30:06.4. It was good to see
Becky Lowrance back and feeling good enough
to win the women's masters. Richard Leiboult,
who won last year was the male masters winner.
In the 5K, Jon Van Arkel strolled in with a 19:40
and Brittany Simpkins won the women's in 21:53.
At 9 a.m., some of the Scouts were able to complete
their one-mile run patch requirement. Before the race, they led us
in the Boy Scout oath with full color guard.
Saturday,
March 15, 2008
True
to form, the Junior League put on an extremely organized event.
The rain kept some folks away, but 254 people entered.
David Hunsucker (17:39) ran a strategic
race, passing early leader Sam Brown after the two-mile point. The
women's field was extremely competitive, with four women coming in
within 30 seconds. Dana Nippes (19:43)
led from the start. Great job everyone!
Saturday,
March 8, 2008
What was confusing to some, was a good time for others. The Ozark
Upper Elementary PTA moms created a lot of excitement with this event.
All 5th and 6th graders were able to get timed in the mile but continue
on to finish the 5K for awards. The attendance was great.
Extra credit is a good incentive. There were also many regular
folks who came out in the 18 degree morning. Next year, we will
iron out the kinks.
Saturday,
March1, 2008
March
came in as a welcome promise of spring. It brought out several
runners to compete in the Missouri Winter Games. Thanks for
showing up.
Saturday,
February 23, 2008
There were 60 brave souls who showed up for
this race, starting and finishing at Fair Grove High School. The
start was adjusted to allow for the new construction. The weather
affected the one-mile participation, as they all decided to stay in bed.
Everyone who came enjoyed themselves. Andrew Lowery ran away with
first place in 18:41, while Dee Sheridan won the women's overall in
23:44. Races like this will make the spring and summer events seem
so easy!
Saturday,
February 9, 2008
It was so good to see everyone and be
back into the swing of racing. We really missed it for those few
weeks that we were off. There are lots of great events coming up.
This race brought a few surprises. Case Van Arkel decided he felt
so strong, he would just run the 10k instead of the 5k. This is a
small race with a very competitive field. Check out the complete
results by selecting the race in the chart on the left.
Saturday,
January 19, 2008
What a difference a year makes. Last year, people were
in the throes of the ice storm at this time, barely able to get out of
their snow caves. This was a clear, but cold day, and several
people showed up to eat pancakes and visit. Oh yeah, there was a
3000 meter estimated time race also. We enjoyed it, and we are
looking forward to 2008. See you at the Polar Bear Run!
